This report describes the process by which I created a concise but comprehensive online source of information about best practices in sustainability for urban planners. The goal of the project was to provide accessible information that would help planners in ways that help them comprehend and implement sustainable solutions to common planning problems that are found throughout the United States. To create the website, I researched methods for communicating clearly to planners, took a graduate course in communicating about sustainability, and drew on information that I had compiled on sustainable solutions for transportation, economy, water, green space, and governance.

Hospital visitation policies have continued to evolve throughout the pandemic resulting in visitation restrictions for COVID patients. To positively shape the experience for patients, families, and care providers a new communication plan utilizing virtual visiting emerged. The purpose of this quality improvement project, developed based on the caring theory, is to explore if implementing iPads with virtual visiting capabilities is effective in increasing patient and family satisfaction. IPads were deployed throughout a large, emergency department located in the southwest United States to enable virtual communication among patients, families, and healthcare workers to measure the patient and family’s satisfaction. After the virtual visit the patient and family member had the option to complete a satisfaction survey. The anonymous post-visit Likert-scale surveys measured (1) ease of iPad use, (2) staff engagement, and (3) mental health - coping and stress. Participants were recruited via the electronic medical record that displayed patients being ruled out for COVID. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis and the results showed high levels of satisfaction among the patients and families in all areas. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the availability of virtual visits is beneficial for patients and families. The implementation of video communication via iPad showed high levels of patient and family satisfaction, mental health outcomes and increased family involvement.

Capturing and presenting high-quality data can be challenging for free clinics due to lack of resources and technology avoidance. If free clinics are unable to present impactful data to current and potential donors, this may limit funding and restrict care provided to underserved and vulnerable populations. The following is a quality improvement project which addresses utilization of information systems within a free clinic. For one month, volunteer providers completed appointment summary forms for each patient seen in the clinic. Electronic form submissions (E=110) were compared to paper form submissions (P=196), with quality of data determined by form completeness scores. Welch’s t-test was used to determine statistical significance between electronic and paper form completeness scores (E=9.7, P=8.5) (p < .001). Findings suggest that utilization of electronic data collection tools within a free clinic produce more complete and accurate data. Barriers associated with technology utilization in this under-resourced environment were substantial. Findings related to overcoming some of these barriers may be useful for future exploration of health information technology utilization in under-resourced and technology avoidant settings. Results warrant future investigation of the relationship between quality of free clinic data, information management systems, provider willingness to utilize technology and funding opportunities in free clinics.

Transitions towards sustainability are urgently needed to address the interconnected challenges of economic development, ecological integrity, and social justice, from local to global scales. Around the world, collaborative science-society initiatives are forming to conduct experiments in support of sustainability transitions. Such experiments, if carefully designed, provide significant learning opportunities for making progress on transition efforts. Yet, there is no broadly applicable evaluative scheme available to capture this critical information across a large number of cases, and to guide the design of transition experiments. To address this gap, the article develops such a scheme, in a tentative form, drawing on evaluative research and sustainability transitions scholarship, alongside insights from empirical cases. We critically discuss the scheme's key features of being generic, comprehensive, operational, and formative. Furthermore, we invite scholars and practitioners to apply, reflect and further develop the proposed tentative scheme – making evaluation and experiments objects of learning.
