Computer-based auditory training programs (CBATPs) are used as an at-home aural rehabilitation solution in individuals with hearing impairment, most commonly in recipients of cochlear implants or hearing aids. However, recent advancements in spatial audio and immersive gameplay have not seen inclusion in these programs. Isle Aliquo, a virtual-reality CBATP, is designed to reformat traditional rehabilitation exercises into virtual 3D space. The program explores how the aural exercise outcomes of detection, discrimination, direction, and identification can be improved with the incorporation of directional spatial audio, as well as how the experience can be made more engaging to improve adherence to training routines. Fundamentals of professional aural rehabilitation and current CBATP design inform the structure of the exercise modules found in Isle Aliquo.

Never Fully What It Is is an electronic/pop music performance constructed with the intent of exploring the interplay between digital sound and gender in the context of my own transition throughout the past year. Thematically, the project focuses on issues of emergence and authenticity in the contexts of trans identity and queer feminism, drawing from literature regarding debates about queer assimilation and gendered associations within systems of genre. It aims not to encapsulate the whole of my transition, but rather to focus on the forces shaping it. From a sonic perspective, the techniques used are largely drawn from hyperpop and other experimental and/or queer genres. The resultant performance is an attempt to understand itself, as a digital body and as an encapsulation of how it feels to be young, transgender, and online.

Meloscape, an innovative music therapy iPad app, addresses the challenge of providing an authentic therapeutic experience virtually to older adults. Meloscape offers a user-friendly platform that goes beyond existing apps by providing standalone simulations of music therapy sessions that can also be used as a tool between in-person sessions. Developed with a focus on research, accessibility, lifelong learning, and the unique needs of older adults, Meloscape features follow-along video sessions, guided meditations, personalized music selections, and journaling capabilities, creating a holistic and immersive music therapy experience. Meloscape strives to empower older adults to independently engage in music therapy, fostering cognitive and physical well-being and enriching their lives in profound ways.

This research examines twelfth-century Anglo-Norman literature as social commentary, in support of or as critique of the ruling class, and investigates what Anglo-Norman society considered the most profound responsibilities of kingship. Literature offered a space for courtly poets and chroniclers to critique authority and express concerns about issues in the court. Both R. Howard Bloch (2003) and Albrecht Classen (2008) have examined the political aspect of Marie de France’s lais, relying on the context in John of Salisbury’s political treatise Policraticus. While John’s written views are broadly reflective of his society’s beliefs, he primarily examines the king’s role in promoting religion and justice. This study’s inclusion of three other chronicles written contemporaneously—The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Geoffrey of Monmouth’s The History of the Kings of Britain, and Walter Map’s De Nugis Curialium—reveals more nuance and breadth in both the Anglo-Norman political realm and twelfth-century ideologies of kingship. By extending prior research, broadening the range of voices included in the conversation, and analyzing multiple chronicles in conjunction with the lais of Marie de France, this research explores what twelfth-century Anglo-Norman society considered the four most critical tenets of kingship: reverence for religious authority, the administration of equitable justice, generosity in sustaining one’s vassals and strangers alike, and respecting the bonds of feudal loyalty.

Music festivals are a vibrant celebration of art, culture, and community, attracting global audiences and creating memorable experiences. However, the environmental footprint associated with these events from waste production, energy consumption, transportation, and water usage, poses significant sustainability challenges. This thesis proposes the development of a sustainable festival event management software designed to enhance and support sustainability practices at music festivals. The software enables real-time monitoring and analysis of key environmental strategies in waste management, energy use, transportation modes, and water management, assisting organizers in making informed decisions towards reducing ecological impacts. The research encompasses a detailed review of existing sustainable practices in the festival industry, identification of critical monitoring areas, and the integration of relevant algorithms for data analysis within the software. By facilitating better management through technology, this software aims to set a new standard for eco-friendly festival operations, promoting a balance between operational needs and environmental mindfulness.

College 101 is a limited mini-series podcast to highlight the misconceptions and preconceptions that students have surrounding college and to disprove and provide advice to the contrary. Each episode interviews one or two people who either currently attend or graduated from Arizona State University. The project focuses on four main topics in each episode: funny stories from time during college, advice for the audience, the media’s impact on the interviewee’s view of college, and some personalized topics based on each person’s background. The goal of this project is to provide support and comfort to students who may feel that they are alone in their college experience or that they are “missing out” on college.

Background: In Navajo (Diné) populations, the two main forms of medicine that people use include traditional Diné medicine and Western medicine. Traditional medicine can be understood primarily through the concept of maintaining Hózhó or “balance”, while Western medicine is defined through the use of scientific evidence-based techniques and research. The

Background: In Navajo (Diné) populations, the two main forms of medicine that people use include traditional Diné medicine and Western medicine. Traditional medicine can be understood primarily through the concept of maintaining Hózhó or “balance”, while Western medicine is defined through the use of scientific evidence-based techniques and research. The reasons and barriers to using each form of medicine respectively are varied depending on aspects such as accessibility, familiarity, trust, or cost. Overall, there is a current lack of community viewpoints in regards to past examples of the intersection between traditional and Western medicine. This thesis examines reasons behind why Diné individuals use traditional Diné medicine and Western medicine respectively, and their viewpoints on the potential intersection. Methods: An anonymous online survey was distributed via snowball sampling from November 2023 to February 2024 after obtaining ASU IRB approval. It consisted of questions focused on demographics, use of traditional medicine, use of Western medicine, and opinion on the intersection between traditional and Western medicine. Statistical analysis and emerging themes were then performed and noted respectively. Results: There were a total of 15 responses to the online survey. A majority of participants previously used traditional medicine (80%), while all had previously used Western medicine (100%). There was a similar level of satisfaction and perceived efficiency for each, averages ranging from 3.8 to 4.0 respectively on a scale of 1 to 5. Many respondents used traditional medicine for more cultural and spiritual/mental health reasons, while many used Western medicine for more physical health reasons. Cost was the main barrier for each. Participants showed overall positive receptibility to potential intersections, but there was some hesitance in regards to scenarios where Western providers recommended traditional medicine use. Conclusion: Many reasons and barriers behind participant use of traditional and Western medicine were reflective of what was found in the literature review. The overall frequency of use, satisfaction, and efficiency can be further understood by a majority of participants living outside the Navajo Nation for long periods of time. The use of traditional medicine also made participants feel more connected to their culture, which can also contribute to the high levels of satisfaction/efficiency for traditional medicine. Interestingly, cost was found to be the primary barrier of each, which indicates room for growth in both respective fields to increase patient use. There was overall positive receptiveness to a possible intersection for delivery methods of medicine which indicates an overall desire to maintain Hózhó and holistic health, however the type of questions and recommendations made by respective providers needs to be done with care. This type of intersection should continue to be explored through community driven discussion and creativity in future studies.

Sphaera Somnium is a 360 degree audiovisual installation that serves as a gateway for individuals to step into a realm filled with speculative spaces, where immersive techniques encourage the human senses to explore uncharted territories. Within Sphaera Somnium, we aim to demonstrate how new spatial media can enrich user experiences and offer glimpses into alternate perspectives. By seamlessly blending audio and visuals, this immersive journey is meant to evoke dreamlike, multi-sensory sensations. The project also offers accessibility to realities that would typically require significant time, expense, and transportation to access. This accessibility not only breaks down physical barriers but also levels the playing field on the cost of experience, making it available to a wider audience regardless of geographical location or financial means. By providing a platform for individuals to engage with these speculative environments, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of our relationship with technology, perception, and the world around us. As participants are transported into these immersive realms, they are encouraged to contemplate the emerging uses of new technologies and how they shape our understanding of reality.

A virtual exhibition featuring four vignettes telling the story of how a certain group of friends met and are then later reunited to recall their story. Each vignette, with a duration of 2-3 minutes, will screen a different perspective of each member's recollection about their first meeting. Each of the four vignettes will be heavily influenced by each group members' favorite musical genres along with selected films to mirror these musical themes. The project will utilize 4 different film genres and each vignette will have their own distinctive color grade, cinematography, and musical score to compliment the characters’ personality and perspective. The exhibit is non-linear, giving viewers the freedom to explore the vignettes in any order they choose. The non-linear vignettes will be able to tell a single, cohesive story, but still preserve the freedom to view a single character’s perspective without taking away from the experience. This approach allows each visitor to craft their own narrative timeline, enhancing their engagement and investment in the experience. This will be achieved in the set up of the exhibition with each vignette displayed on individual screens in order to allow each vignette to be played simultaneously. There will be a total of four different screens that will play one of the four vignettes and will be displayed to allow multiple people to experience the exhibition. The overall goal is to create a unique viewing experience that showcases the creativity and technical skills of the team through unique visual storytelling techniques.

Several studies on cheerleading as a sport can be found in the literature; however, there is no research done on the value added to the experience at a university, to an athletic department or at a particular sport. It has been the feeling that collegiate and professional cheerleaders are not given the appropriate recognition nor credit for the amount of work they do. This contribution is sometimes in question as it depends on the school and the sports teams. The benefits are believed to vary based on the university or professional teams. This research investigated how collegiate cheerleaders and dancers add value to the university sport experience. We interviewed key personnel at the university and conference level and polled spectators at sporting events such as basketball and football. We found that the university administration and athletic personnel see the ASU Spirit Squad as value added but spectators had a totally different perspective. The university acknowledges the added value of the Spirit Squad and its necessity. Spectators attend ASU sporting events to support the university and for the entertainment. They enjoy watching the ASU Spirit Squad perform but would continue to attend ASU sporting events even if cheerleaders and dancers were not there.
