Mission aviation groups operate aircraft in areas with limited infrastructure. Existing airdrop methods pose significant risk due to their lack of steerability. This thesis details the development of Manna, a system built to address these concerns. Manna provides an automated, low cost, safe steerable delivery platform, through a custom designed parafoil and guidance unit. Flight tests and simulations show that Manna can provide a safer alternative for critical air deliveries.
Honored Brow is a local, non-profit, start-up business that specializes in brow lamination and lash lifts with tinting services. The business is founded and operated by four students enrolled in Arizona State University, Barrett, The Honors College. Honored Brow’s mission, through the thesis project, is to connect and provide brow and lash services to enhance natural beauty and empower women. To positively impact the community, Honored Brow is partnering with Dress for Success Phoenix, a nonprofit organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools needed to help them thrive in work and in life. All proceeds raised will be donated to Dress for Success Phoenix to help them in their endeavors. Honored Brow’s target market is Arizona State University sorority members within the Greek Leadership Village, but services will be available to anyone who seeks lamination or lift services. The company exhibits a competitive advantage because the products and services extended are highly rated and certified while still being offered at an affordable price for their target market. The focus is not on making the most revenue per service, but rather on creating relationships and retaining clientele by helping make women feel good about themselves. Honored Brow’s marketing channels include an Instagram page that will feature completed services and testimonials, the Honored Brow website to schedule a service, presentations at sorority chapters, and tabling at the Greek Leadership Village to promote the business. Vista Del Sol will be used to perform the services. The thesis team has a diversified skill set and is well-positioned to succeed in the business endeavor. Two team members certified in brow lamination, lash lift, and tinting will perform the service. One team member will keep track of finances, while the other team member will oversee the website development and scheduling. The team sees great potential in the project as one of the team members has previously run an eyelash company and all proceeds will go toward a great cause.
Founders Lab 2022-23 Team #23 project is the complete business plan of Spinaway. Spinaway is multi iterative spinning top that represents a story of supporting an engineering student. Spinaway, over the course of the project, became progressively more complex and is representative of the engineering students design prowess. As entrepreneurs, we understand the challenges and obstacles that come with growing a business, which is why we developed a revolutionary software platform to connect entrepreneurs with qualified life coaches. The purpose of Coach Connect is to empower entrepreneurs to achieve their maximum potential by providing access to premium coaches and cutting-edge resources in human excellence, including the latest advancements in neuroscience and psychology. This objective is accomplished by the development of an application to connect entrepreneurs with coaches, providing value through facilitation. Our platform is unique in leveraging a user database and weighting system to match constituents based on suitable preferences like individual learning and communication styles. Based on categorical filters, our platform perpetrates matches for a more personalized and productive coaching experience. The application addresses key challenges for both coaches and entrepreneurs: a lack of effective marketing resources for coaches and laborious tribulation in finding the right coach. By bridging this gap as the “connective tissue”, we will create a cost-effective, efficient way for coaches to scale their businesses while enhancing the personal and professional development of entrepreneurs. At our core, we are driven by a powerful mission–to unleash the immense potential of entrepreneurs. We are committed to providing every entrepreneur with the tools and resources he or she needs to succeed. As a vehicle of social change, we will make a meaningful impact in the entrepreneurial community where those with the greatest capability require the most decisive wisdom. Our two-ended target market consists of ambitious entrepreneurs aged 25-45 seeking personalized support to overcome obstacles alongside experienced life coaches seeking exposure to those clients for expanding their practices. Coaches will be charged a monthly subscription while entrepreneurs will pay a small fee for platform utilization. Coach Connect boasts a talented and diverse team of five individuals with backgrounds in coaching, NeuroLinguistic Programming, accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, customer service, software engineering, and personal development. Cross-functionality allows us to iterate per validations while algorithms are in development, reducing our time to market. Leveraging an extensive network in the startup industry, as well as resources and connections through Arizona State University, we are uniquely positioned to scale Coach Connect.
Our project is to create a simplified, portable, modular electrocardiogram known as ECG/EKG. Most medical facilities, including hospitals, clinics, and skilled nursing facilities, still rely on traditional 12-lead EKG equipment consisting of a large cart with long 10 wires. These wires can be a pain to constantly detangle and rearrange to determine a person’s heart conditions. This creates issues in fast paced scenarios such as when a patient is experiencing a heart attack and needs an EKG stat. Additionally, the current technology can be somewhat unreliable at determining heart conditions, causing providers to request multiple EKG’s for patients. With our improved versatile EKG, we can help solve these issues and implement additional outpatient use with its portable features. This can be done by remotely monitoring heart conditions during activities such as exercise, sleep, or stressful events, without worrying about wire disturbance.
The mental health of ASU students has been negatively affected by the pandemic. Our research looks to prove that COVID-19 has caused an increase in stress levels while uncovering other relationships to stress. We obtained our data by conducting a survey through Google Forms that was exclusively accessible to ASU students. Stress levels were measured with the use of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). We find that the stress of ASU students from before the pandemic to during rises from 15 to 22 points, a 50% increase (n = 228). We discovered that women are more stressed than men before and during the pandemic. We also discovered that there is no difference between stresses among different races. We notice that there is a parabolic relationship between enrollment time and stress levels with the peak occurring during semesters 2-6. We also conclude that students who attended more than 5 events during the pandemic had lower stress scores, and those who had their videos on for at least 3 events had lower stress scores. Furthermore, students who utilized campus resources to manage their stress had higher stress levels than those who did not.
Working with chocolate is a difficult endeavor. However, through the use of additive manufacturing technologies, the labor involved can be reduced. One difficulty is the pumping of the melted chocolate through the system onto the print bed of the printer. In this paper, three systems of transferring chocolate are investigated: A syringe system, a gear pump system, and an auger system. Each system is explained with a model of the proposed system and the pros and cons are discussed. Lastly, a system composed of parts of the syringe and auger system is proposed. The positive and negative aspects of this design are discussed, and a 3D model of the system is given as well. This system is suggested as a better option, and future research can be done to investigate and rate these systems in greater detail. In commercial food applications, these technologies can change the way chocolate is manipulated, and difficult practices can be simplified for home chefs.
The creative project was to create a working prototype kit that can teach multiple lessons of the curriculum that the schools or individual families could purchase. The curriculum would be centered on the engineering and science curriculum that is introduced from fourth to sixth grade classes. By creating an interactive kit with curriculum that the students could individualize and use for multiple lessons, the goal is to get them more engaged in the material. The project would consist of a week-long project kit that will introduce different engineering topics for three to four days of the week with mini projects and a final project that pieces together the topics they learned. The biggest take away from the project was how to best get user feedback and fast track the IRB process. The IRB process for a project focusing on minors and teachers will cause some catches in the process. Included is a discussion on the IRB process for a project like this and how to best go through or avoid IRB to ensure the project can progress, while still gathering valuable information.
