Description
The aim of this thesis is to explain the dichotomy between public perception of leadership and quantifiable measurement of leadership based on Information Measurement Theory, a method of utilizing deductive logic, and to identify and interpret the causes of such discrepancies as seen in the case of Steve Jobs. The general public perceives Steve Jobs to be an effective leader because he was visionary, entrepreneurial, charismatic and highly successful. However, these perceptions are not true indicators of leadership but rather qualitative interpretations of leadership without tangible evidence in support of this idea. An analysis of words found in multiple appearances of online articles relating to Steve Jobs and leadership revealed a variety of common factors associated with Steve Jobs' leadership, supporting a primarily positive viewpoint by the public. The thesis then identified how a new methodology of measuring leadership effectiveness based on quantitative data, known as the New Leadership Model, concludes Steve Jobs does not meet the criteria necessary to be considered a Best Value Leader, one who uses alignment rather than management, direction and control to achieve maximum efficiency within an organization. The discrepancies between public perception of Steve Jobs as a leader and the results of the New Leadership Model evaluation show significant variance. Potential rationale for these variances is offered in the thesis. In conclusion, the thesis argues that public perception will often differ from quantifiable measurement of leadership based on the interpretation of leadership by various groups and by the methods each group uses to identify characteristics of effective leadership.

Description
This thesis provides a detailed analysis and risk assessment of the various stakeholders impacted by the US Airways-American Airlines merger. The stakeholders include employees, shareholders, new American passengers, the cities of Phoenix and Dallas, and other airlines. In order to understand how these stakeholders are impacted, we did thorough analysis of past major airline mergers and referenced cases from those mergers. Because the history of the airline industry is filled with hundreds of mergers and acquisitions, we only reference the America West-US Airways, Delta-Northwest, United-Continental, and Southwest-AirTran mergers in our thesis.

The present study investigates the differences in the academic motivation of traditional and non-traditional students according to Self Determination Theory. Additionally, the study explores the relationships between academic motivation and academic, career, and family stress in traditional and non-traditional students according to the Challenge and Hindrance Stress Framework. A survey was administered to 744 undergraduate students at Arizona State University. An independent samples t-test indicated significant differences between several student groups. According to the results, non-traditional students are more intrinsically motivated "to know" and traditional students are more extrinsically motivated by "identified regulation" and "external regulation". Additionally, a correlation matrix indicated that academic stress is positively related to extrinsic motivation, family stress is related to both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in all students, and career stress is related to intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in working students.

Description
Digital technologies are quickly being combined with and replacing teacher curriculums and student resource tools. This is particularly true with advances in digital textbooks as it provides a medium for opportunity and growth in the nature of the textbook as it pertains to students in the classroom. Although great strides have been taken in intelligent tutoring systems personalized toward a student's needs there seems to be an overall disconnect between student needs in the classroom in not utilizing or adopting these technologies. In this paper I provide both conflicting and comparable needs of teachers and students surrounding the textbook to reveal the costs and benefits associated with technology adoption. Through 4 teacher interviews and 4 participatory prototyping sessions I found that students and teachers desire the following elements in technology: 1) Collaboration 2) Synchronicity 3) Adaptive 4) Automation. I discuss the implications of implementing such features and how they could be applied in integrated Q&A system to encourage collaborative learning.

Description
This honors thesis examines community gardens from throughout Phoenix, Arizona. It shows that community gardens have the potential to both support and hinder sustainability efforts, encourage community development, and increase food access. By measuring the temperature at various community gardens throughout Phoenix, AZ, community gardens were shown to minimize local effects of the urban heat island. Because they use water to survive and Phoenix, AZ is in a desert, this contributes to a depleting water supply. Interviews of gardeners from community gardens throughout Phoenix depicted that community gardens can provide sites for community development as well as promoting food access.

Arizona Microcredit Initiative (AMI) is a student-run nonprofit organization that empowers passionate men and women to start their own companies. Through this project, AMI will continue to fulfill its mission by establishing organizational processes that staff members can reference while making strategic decisions in the future. This project provides detailed information regarding AMI's Founding and History, along with current operations. This information being available to AMI members will allow the team to continue to empower themselves, AMI clients, and the organization as a whole to grow and make a larger impact in the Greater Phoenix community.

Description
ObamaCare is a healthcare reform looking to provide efficiency and cost savings to healthcare patients. As such, ObamaCare requires that all medical documents be in electronic form as well as a website be created to allow Americans to sign up for healthcare coverage. The ObamaCare website has many vulnerabilities: excessive code, clear text protected information, and insufficient testing. The remediation efforts will cost over one billion dollars and require many months of recoding. In order to help reduce security risks in the healthcare industry, an effective security awareness program must be implemented. This program would help to prevent the factor of human vulnerability as well as prevent healthcare companies from experiencing any bad publicity and fines as the result of a preventable security incident.

This qualitative research project investigates the contemporary landscape of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) politics and activism, specifically the concept and identities of so-called "straight allies." Through 13 in-depth interviews with individuals who identify as straight allies, we explore the ways in which these heterosexuals engage in LGBT politics and activist culture. We take a grounded theory approach to data analysis, through which the concept of "passive" and "active" activism emerges as a potent framework to understand these allies' meaning making practices, as well as how they negotiate the emotional, interpersonal, and mass-mediated complexities of being straight in LGBT communities and politics. Thompson's (2005) theory of "ontological choreography" is used as an interpretive lens to make sense of the heterogeneous knowledges and experiences our participants draw upon to constitute their straight ally identities. Implications for future research on LGBT politics and straight alliance are discussed.

Description
In a season that spans 162 games over the course of six months, MLB teams that travel more face additional fatigue and jetlag from travel. This factor could negatively impact them on the field. To explore this issue, I tested the significance of different variables by creating four models, which compared travel with a team's ability to win games as well as its ability to hit home runs. Based on these models, it appears as though changing time zones does not affect the outcome of games. However, these results did indicate that visiting teams with a greater time zone advantage over their opponent are less likely to hit a home run in a game.
